Great Vow Zen Monastery is located in tranquil, rolling meadows near Portland, Oregon. The monastery is situated in a peaceful setting on 25 acres of meadow and forest overlooking the Columbia River, a conducive environment for restful reflection and learning. Guests are welcome to stroll along wooded walking trails, pause in the lovely remembrance garden and enjoy the orchard and large organic gardens which feed body and soul. We will have the entire grounds to ourselves during this training. The meeting rooms, dining hall and sleeping quarters are accessible by all abilities.
We have purposely chosen this location in an effort to lower costs and enable more people to attend.
Please note: In order to keep costs to a minimum, participants (health permitting) will be asked to assist with a half hour of wash-up after meals and to make and strip their beds.
The kitchen staff prepares delicious, healthy and well-balanced meals, including local seasonal fruits and vegetables, many of which come from the monastery’s organic gardens. Meals are ovo-lacto-vegetarian. Coffee, hot tea and snacks are available throughout the rental period free of charge. If you have specific food allergies please indicate that when you register.
Accommodations are modest, clean and comfort dormitory style sleeping quarters with visual privacy, furnished with a single bed. All linens, blanket and towels are provided. Shared gender-designated bathrooms and showers are steps away. Because many people are sensitive to scents, please do not wear perfume, cologne, scented soaps, hair products or creams during our week together.
Springtime in upstate Oregon is beautiful as the meadows fill with colorful wildflowers and the tall conifers set a green backdrop. The weather will most likely be temperate, marked by occasional rain, layering clothing for comfort is advised. It’s always wise to check the weather forecast shortly before traveling.
The UCSD Center for Mindfulness will set up a Ride Share Bulletin Board in coordinating shuttle rides for those arriving by air at Portland International Airport. If you will be traveling by car, bus or train, please see specific directions to the monastery on their website.
